Here's a few happy snaps from our 7am Christmas morning, not as early as some had (but early enough!) I love that the kids are at the age where they understand Christmas, watching their faces was one of the best things about this morning.

2 Things You Should Write Down...

There are just some things in life that are better to write down... Here are two of them!

1. Throw together Dinners!!

How many times do you just throw together a dinner and while you eat it your thinking "This is the best freakin' dinner! Wow! I should do this more often"
... and then by the time the nights over you've forgotten it and all it's ingredients!! Forever disappeared into the nothingness of forgotten throw-together-dinner land.

Yup so! lets remedy this problem- Write it down. After dinner, grab your cook book, make up some random name to match its awesome-ness like "Whats-it-called dinner" or "Thing-a-me-bob-chicken mash up". Then it can become a family regular dish that your kids will want in their recipe book one day.

2. The I love list
Not what your expecting, although that's a good idea too, but this is the I love gift list.

 "I love ....{insert item}" exclaimed your bestie
 "I want... {insert item}" MIL mumbled randomly

Take note of these little side comments. Those moments in a conversation when someone reveals something they have always wanted. I tend to forget everything, so writing it down guarantees I remember those little things that people who matter really want. When Christmas and Birthdays come rolling round, you will have a head start on what could make the BEST present!

Also minimises the brain-fart moment when you have no clue what to get anyone a day before Christmas! I do lists on my phone, so it's always handy.

So there you have it! Dinners and gifts. Write it or forget it ha!

How to : Remove Labels

This has got to be one of the easiest parts of DIY. Removing the labels off the mason jars you've been collecting. I cannot stand torn labels and price tags or left over sticky gluey bits on jars or drink bottles or new tupperware or books or cutlery or ok you get my point... When I get a new book I de-label that bad-boy so quickly, no one would ever know there was one there!

Ok back to jars.

There is some kind of de-glug products out there on the market that you can rub on and it will dissolve the glue. I prefer this method because it's just so cheap and easy to do.

How to : Remove Labels

What you'll need:
Hot water/boiling water
Dish detergent
Kitchen sink.
1. Fill up the sink with hot soapy water and pop the clean jars in the water.

A. If it's a normal label, hot tap water will do
B. If it's a particularly stubborn label, use boiling water*.

2. Soak until the labels easily peal/rub off.
Sometimes I just pop them in the sink at night and when I wake in the morning put the labels in the bin and drain the sink.

Too easy right??!!  Yup! Now go make the most awesome, Pin-worthy, craft project with your clean jars/bottles

*Dont be silly with boiling water. Think, think think! Hot Hot Hot!

Pancakes!!

It's Pancake time!!
This guy doesn't have friends cause they taste too good to wait for a photo!!

We had a very lazy morning, everyone woke up at 9am! What a great sleep in!! Not bad for having a 2 and 4 year old hey?! Once we finally migrated to the kitchen for breakfast morning tea, Milla and I decided it would be fun to make Pancakes...

A quick google search resulted in "The Best Ever Pancake Recipe". It really is a yummy recipe so I thought I'd share it. Thanks to Anita from Leave Room For Dessert for the recipe! It's written in my book now as my go-to pancake mix.

Best Ever Pancake Recipe

2 cups plain flour
3 tsp baking powder
pinch of salt
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups Milk
1/3 cups sugar
75g butter
extra butter for frying

Mix it all together,
Put some extra butter on your frying pan and cook away!
You know how to do the rest.

Helpful Tip: Cook only as much as you need and freeze the rest in zip lock bags for next time!

12-12-12

12th of the12th in the year 12th.... 12/12/12 was my birthday! and our 7th Wedding Anniversary! What a fun day to have a birthday and anniversary on! Apparently it will be the last repeated number date in our life time! sheesh.

We went on a city adventure, stopped at as many places as we could, drank lots of coffee and ate at lots of cafes. Visited music shops, antique shops, flower shops, I made new vintage-loving-creative friends and David played some vintage electric guitars. We stopped by Bondi saw the beach enjoyed the views.

A great day, indeed!!

How To: Spray Paint a Picture Frame

Spray Painting has definitely increased in popularity lately. I love it- but not for every project. Sometimes brush stroked can really add to a project, a little texture, a little depth and character. Other times it's nice to just do a quick spray, it's done, move onto the next. For painting frames I have done both, paint/spray paint.

Last frame project was a burst of hand painted red for Christmas decorations, this time I am going to spray paint a thrify frame to get the colour I want. It's not really upcycled, per-say, as I bought it from a dollar shop and it is getting a newer-new life? ha! So what does that make it? altered? adjusted? changed to how I like it.

Don't be afraid to buy the style you like and adjust the colours later
(As long as you do actually do the colour change you intended, if not,
keep looking. Lets not turn into hoarders people!)

My Tips on Spray Painting Projects goes a little something like this...

*Do it outdoors
*Protect surrounding area from over spray
*Keep out of windy areas
*Read the Spray can instructions!
*Shake-it' shake-it' shake-it' like a Polaroid
*Light, even coats.
*Once your finished, Turn can upside down and spray until nothing comes out to clean out the nozzle, ready for it's next use.

Okay! Down to business!

Grab a frame, take out all innards

Your choice of spray paint... mine is Satin White by White Knight
Handy Tip: Satin is not flat, it's not gloss,
it's sandwiched in between.

Test out the spray first.

Spray even, light, strokes to avoid dribbles and heavy areas.
This (pictured) is one coat.
Take note of drying times for re-coat written on can, cause they are all different.

Re-coat
Once dry reassemble the frame.

Super-dooper easy right?! Yup! You can do it!

Makes such a difference hey?!

Creating my way out of "Baby Brain" season
One weekend, over a year ago, I was lost in the wilderness of Baby Brain season. I had a one year old, a three year old and a 26 year old and a bad case of Postpartum Depression.

I looked at a chest of drawers that has lived in my lounge room for years and thought. I really hate that thing...

Then it dawned on me- I could change that!!

And so I did. And then I blogged about it.

Through creating and writing about it, I not only discovered that I love making things I also rediscovered me and a road out of that wilderness.

Now, I write a flourishing blog and offer my laboured-over pieces for you to have and love.

I hope that each piece will add to your happy place and remind you-- You are worth it!! You are important.

Photo Shoot in the White room

I had a little fun photo shoot today using Bunting and a few other things that I have either painted or created. Thought you might like to have a stick-beak at them.

Nice?

I like them!

I am loving having my white room!!... the art studio... to display some of my fun things. Granted the kids sprawled out behind me, crayons and pens littered everywhere and Phoenix creating himself a nest of blankies ha! Milla "helping" to decorate. What is life without mess hey? Maybe I should do a post about how to -Attempt- to keep kids mess under control. One day when I have mastered it!! ha!!

Hmm anyways. Hope you enjoyed my little eye candy photo shoot! I had fun rearranging everything and designing the spaces.

19 more days till Christmas 2012

How's your Christmas planning going? Are you organised? Are you one of those people who lay-by (Lay-away?) gifts months and months in advance and have your Christmas feast all planned out?

I'm not. HA!! I am so unorganised this year!

Oh well... It will all come together, I'm sure...

When I was younger, living at home, I used to make my family wait till after my birthday to put up the Christmas tree!! *Blush* that means only 12 days to enjoy the Christmas tree up! I have since revoked that rule, mainly because, I wanted to hang my wooden stars that I made in november- Well you gotta have a tree to hang them on! (Even in the middle of november! Hehe).

Little helpers are the best

Hope your tree is looking good! If it's not up yet, get crack-a-lackin'! (Yes, that's a word)
It's only 19 more days!!

Milla asks all the time if it's Christmas day yet... I really should make an Advent Calendar for her. Might help her understand how many sleeps we have to go.. oh! plus! Since we are a few days in, if we get a chocolate one, we get to open multiple days!! Yum!! Sounds like a plan to me.

Project: Wooden Bunting

Bunting is super popular at the moment. Which is great because, it looks amazing and is so, so, versatile to what ever the occasion/room is. I've seen, paper, cardboard, tassels, fabric, doilies, baby shirts,  pictures, cake toppers, knitted, pom poms, washi tape... so, as per normal, Newly Antiques Bunting is made of.... da da da duuuuummmmmm..... Timber.

Wooden Bunting

Hanging up in my white room (Art Studio)

Beautiful chains linking them

Slight floral detail

Rough edges, giving that antique, rustic and real feel to the design.

I am in looove with how they turned out. For bunting that is made of something so sturdy, it still feels so delicate to look at. Plus I had fun making it.

These are For Sale, feel free to contact me for orders/availability, Australia only

One-Chapter-Wonder Finally Finishes

Well finally, 6 months and 22 days later I can finally announce...

I have finished reading The Help. Ha!

No, it didn't actually take me 4,944 hours to read that book. I re-picked it up 2 days ago and finished it today from where I put it down all those months and months ago.

I am excited because I am a self confessed "One-Chapter-Wonder". No Joke. Doesn't matter how much I love the first chapter and have intentions of finishing. I always put it down and don't go back. Weird, I know, but what can I say? It's just what I do.

I purposely left it on my bed side table, so it would glare at me Read me, Read me, READ MEEEEE. I finished all my work the other day, sanding, painting, and delivering Christmas Stars and thought... I am gonna read some more of that glaring at me book. So I did! And I couldn't put it down.

The funny thing was, when I read the last line and looked up. I realised that I was still in my home. Everything was just as it was before, but for some reason I felt like I had just come back from a huge adventure- like I had actually lived through the story I was reading!

If you haven't seen it, or read it. I highly recommend it. Was brilliant.
